Mitch Semel executive with deep expertise in creating video platforms, apps, networks and programs for news, information, talk, comedy, drama and variety content. In his current role running Katie Couric Media, he leads the development and production of factual and scripted programming. Previously, as Executive Editor of HuffPost Live, he co-designed, launched and managed the groundbreaking social video platform. Formerly, he was General Manager of The Onion, where he transitioned the satirical brand from print to the digital era via its cable series, website, mobile apps and social feeds.
In the above video, Mitch speaks to how the television has transformed from a 3-4 channel world to a 500-channel cable network, to an even larger 100 million-channel network through the creation of digital and social platforms such Snapchat, YouTube and Facebook. Everyone with a mobile phone is now able to become part of the conversation and have their own ‘television series.’ Mobile video is TV and now is the chance for program producers to use their phones as broadcast trucks, edit suites, and cameras. Semel stresses,
“I would really encourage you as program producers to look into every tool that you’ve got that let’s you interact with viewers and encourage and ingest content, not only from viewers but from everyone you work with – your stringers, your reporters, your producers.” This opens the door for creativity and encourages the world to think differently.
